Pet cat shot by police in bizarre ordeal

// February 23rd, 2005

||So this loving cat goes psycho all of a sudden and starts ripping her family new ones left and right. After a tense 20-minute standoff, police arrive and are forced to kill the screaming, hissing ball of fur.

Why does this sound familiar to me?|

The Definition of Irony

// February 22nd, 2005

|I’ve been (I think) admirably silent on the whole “Paris Hilton’s Hacked Sidekick” thing. I suspect danray.net may be the only blog on the planet that hasn’t covered it.

Sitting here this evening, I just saw a commercial for T-Mobile’s Sidekick II offering. Jeffrey Tambor is in the grocery store, fondling produce. He starts calling and SMSing his celebrity friends for advice on picking a ripe cantelope.

At one point, we get a close-up on Ms. Hilton Herself, shaking her head and saying, “Jeffrey… Don’t shake it!”

Fortunatey, this ad didn’t go into data security and privacy issues.| |

Classic Hunter S. Thompson 1994 rant on Nixon’s death

// February 22nd, 2005

If the right people had been in charge of Nixon’s funeral, his casket would have been launched into one of those open-sewage canals that empty into the ocean just south of Los Angeles. He was a swine of a man and a jabbering dupe of a president. Nixon was so crooked that he needed servants to help him screw his pants on every morning. Even his funeral was illegal. He was queer in the deepest way. His body should have been burned in a trash bin.

These are harsh words for a man only recently canonized by President Clinton and my old friend George McGovern–but I have written worse things about Nixon, many times, and the record will show that I kicked him repeatedly long before he went down. I beat him like a mad dog with mange every time I got a chance, and I am proud of it. He was scum.

Nascent Scandal Watch part 2: Weedgate

// February 20th, 2005

CBS News is breaking a report that tapes secretly recorded in 1998 feature then-Governor G. W. Bush admitting to marijuana and cocain use. Nothing we didn’t know before, but it’s yet another potential “-gate” that I’ll be interested to watch the administration squirm out of.

The site presents you with two pictures. You click the one that you think is better. Then you get the overall scores for both pictures. It’s like a hot-or-not for random photos. Disturbingly addictive!

Geez.. Jeaneane Garafalo or two chicks in tight dresses? Mr Bubble or a picture of Donkey from Shrek 2? Batgirl or candy fruit slices?

SAN MATEO COUNTY / Gorilla Foundation rocked by breast display lawsuit / Former employees say they were told to expose chests

// February 18th, 2005

Turns out Koko the sign-language gorilla is a boob ape. Former employees of the Gorilla Foundation are suing for harassment, claiming that they were required, as an unwritten condition of employment, to “flash the monkey”.

The suit, in any case, says that Patterson would interpret hand movements by Koko as a demand to see exposed human nipples. She warned Alperin and Keller that their employment with the foundation would suffer, the suit says, if they “did not indulge Koko’s nipple fetish.”

That sign says “Take it FREE”.

This pile of stuff is less than 100 yards from the Habitat for Humanity Hand-Me-Up Store, where it would be trivially easy to donate these things.

Whose Side is the White House ON, Anyway!?

// February 16th, 2005

Back in the First Iraq War, a number of downed American pilots were beaten and abused by the former Iraqui regime–some of them at the now-famous Abu Ghraib.

Now the Bush administration is fighting to keep them from collecting the $1 billion settlement that was awarded to them as compensation.

Why? Because now the Iraquis are the good guys. And they need the money.

The case is now being sent to the US Supreme Court; the Court should decide in the next couple months whether to hear the appeal.

Valentines Day Massacre

// February 15th, 2005

Chicago, February 14, 1929.

Gunmen in the suspected employment of organized-crime boss Al Capone murder seven members of the George “Bugs” Moran North Siders gang in a garage on North Clark Street. The so-called St. Valentine’s Day Massacre stirred a media storm centered on Capone and his illegal Prohibition-era activities and motivated federal authorities to redouble their efforts to find evidence incriminating enough to take him off the streets.

Can This Black Box See Into the Future?

// February 13th, 2005

Two surprising things about this article: one, that a global network of random number generators evidently show a response in advance of major global incidents. Two, that my former employer, John Hartwell, who in an earlier life was a paranormal researcher, is mentioned heavily in this article!
