My sad, hungry climb to Internet stardom.

// June 26th, 2005

This Slate article by Daniel Engber describes his the rise and fall of his “Crying while Eating” website (remember that?) which was created — along with the 7-11 Slurpee site and the GPS Underpants — for a viral media contest.

His experience is simliar to (though vastly larger than) my experience with the Industrial Shredder and Pocky Comercial posts. It’s an amazing thing to have a blog post picked up in the blogosphere and pumping traffic your way.

Iraq War Fatalities

// June 26th, 2005

This is just chilling. This flash animation shows one frame for each day of the war, ticking up the location and chronology of each death in the war.

Dear Mr. Rove

// June 26th, 2005

Blog this far and wide. This need to be read by every American.

Kristen Breitwiser is a 9/11 widow (and former Bush voter) who, in the wake of the bungled Iraq war, has become one of the administration’s loudest critics. This open letter to Karl Rove in The Huffington Post is eye-opening, scary, and brilliant.

Buy off your ‘car guilt’

// June 25th, 2005

This is sad. Startup company terrapass can turn your Hummer H2 into a zero-emissions vehicle.

How? Simple. Pay for their service, and they’ll buy out someone else’s pollution credits equivalent to the car’s output, thereby decreasing pollution output from some other source by the same amount as your car spews! Presto! One guilt-free gas guzzler!

That’s right, now for one low, low payment you can officially be Not Part of the Solution!

Short straw for Firefox users?

// June 25th, 2005

This article claims that 1/10th of UK web pages don’t load in Firefox. It’s pretty careful not to blame anything but sloppy worksmanship both in Redmond and on the desks of web designers around the world.

Irony is, MY site has a bug in its template that causes the left margin to collapse in IE, but not in Firefox. It was months before somebody pointed it out to me, and even though my traffic is overwhelmingly IE users, I really can’t be bothered to find and fix this thing. Does that make me a bad blogger?

We’re All In!

// June 14th, 2005

Well, everything’s in the house and the movers are gone. All the furniture that had to be disassembled to move has been reassembled. The living room is in some rough semblance of order.

Marcy just headed over to Lowes to get some mollies for the ceiling screws in the fixture we’re trying to hang in the dining room. I decided to do something that doesn’t involve standing on a ladder, like hooking up the roadrunner.

More later, maybe. I’m pretty beat.

Well, We’re Out

// June 13th, 2005

Blogging now from Deb and Steve’s house. The Durham house is empty and the closing is complete. We’re homeless!

I have to admit, I had a very unexpected burst of sadness as we got the house finished up. Looking over OUR living room and OUR bedroom all empty and clean and sterile, I just came over all wistful and found myself standing there crying. It was a good house. It was good to us, and we to it. I just got all moved by everything we’ve created in it, who we’ve been for each other in it… Had to take a moment.

Tonight we crash at our next-door-neighbor B&B. Our closing is at 9:00 tomorrow morning, and the movers show up at 10:00 or 10:30 having cleaned out Marcy’s office in Chapel Hill on the way.

More later!
